Lunch, Cake & a Changing World 🇹🇭 | Thailand Life Talk

Thailand life talk starts with no plan today — but I bring a story anyway. That’s usually how our best lunch conversations begin: no script, just food, coffee, and whatever is on our minds this week.

We arrive at a friendly, house-style eatery called Sumalee Pastry Cream, complete with a laminated Thai-only menu and a translator app moment. Chanya is immediately focused on one important detail — cake — and yes, there is plenty of it.

While we settle in, I open a broader conversation about what feels like a changing global landscape. I talk about the AUD–THB exchange rate, recent international economic discussions, and how the global system many of us grew up planning around now feels less predictable than it once did.

As a foreigner living in Thailand by choice, I reflect on visas, borders, planning for retirement, and what it means to build a life outside your birth country when rules and systems keep shifting. Meanwhile, Chanya is far more focused on photographing cake for Instagram — which probably says something important about balance.

This kind of Thailand life talk — mixing practical reality with lunch-table philosophy — has become a regular part of our Wednesday outings.

We drift through the last 40 years of change — globalization, security concerns, political reactions — and the practical question many older viewers quietly ask: how do you plan the next chapter when the old blueprint no longer fits?

Then — cake arrives. Orange cake with baby oranges on top, and yes, it’s as good as it looks.

After lunch we make a couple of local stops, including a visit to a friend’s salon, and talk about small business realities in Thailand — including why hairdressing might be one of the more resilient human jobs in an AI-heavy future.
