Our celebration for Loi Krathong at Wat Rai Khing

Last night was the annual celebration of Loi Krathong in Thailand. Loi Krathong takes place on the evening of the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar; hence, the exact date of the festival changes every year. In the Western calendar, this usually falls in the month of November.

Last year, the celebrations were rather subdued given the recent passing of the King, Bhumibol Adulyadej and the Kingdom had gone into mourning, so it was a refreshing site to see that this year, the colour and spectacle had returned. This is a very special time of year for the Thai Buddhist as they launch their Krathong on a river, canal or a pond, making a wish as they do so. The festival may originate from an ancient ritual paying respect to the water spirits.

Don’t worry folks, I will be posting a follow-up vlog for this outing within the next week. It just seemed appropriate to post some pics of our adventure closer to the actual event.
