Thai Ordination Party: A Family Tradition

Chanya’s friend Bamika invited us to her cousin’s ordination party, and we were honoured to be considered part of the family for this special occasion. In Thailand, Buddhist ordination ceremonies hold deep cultural and spiritual significance. They mark a young man’s commitment to enter the monkhood, even for a short time, as a rite of passage and an act of merit for himself and his family.

The ordination party is as important as the ceremony, bringing together extended families and entire communities to celebrate. Thai gatherings like this are vibrant and filled with energy—there are always copious amounts of food, beverages, music, and traditional folk dancing. It’s a unique glimpse into Thai culture’s close-knit and joyous nature.

Join us as we experience this incredible celebration’s sights, sounds, and flavours and learn more about the traditions that make Thai social gatherings so special.
